How To Do Less And Reap More With Internet Marketing
Logic states, the more you do something the more results you achieve. The more you train, the more you get fit – the more you read, the more you acquire knowledge. If the Internet Marketing gurus tell you that by posting one article in an article directory then you will get one link pointing to your site, which is good for search engine rankings – it follows then that the more I submit this article to other directories the more links I get. Most importantly the more links I have pointing to my site, the more Google will love me and rank me well for it. They tell us that search engine optimization is good for rankings so we must include our key word frequently in the articles we post in our sites – Right? Wrong!
Okay so what is this all about, what do I mean when I say less is more with internet marketing. I simply mean that over doing some of the effective internet marketing techniques can get you penalized by search engines and lose valuable traffic. To illustrate my point let us go over some well known internet marketing strategies and I will show you how abusing them can kill your profits. I am currently working on a book on this topic and below are just a few of the things I discuss.
A few years ago you could write one article and then spread it all over the internet and search engines would count all the links pointing back to your site. Unlike the popular belief that search engines will not index all the pages (duplicate content), these different pages containing the same article will be indexed. The only thing is that Google will on show at least one page of the article in their search results.
As for the many inbound links Googlebot will find, the algorithm is developed such that most if not all of the links will be discounted i.e. stripped off its normal PR. Today the top search engines discount the value of links if they come from an article posted all over the net. They call this link spam and they are disgusted by it. Rather pick a few top article directories like Ezinearticles, Goarticles, ArticleCity and ArticleDashboard and post the article to these sites ONLY. You’d be amazed at the results you’d get instead of posting it to hundreds of sites. Also do vary your link anchor text as you post in these directories so that the search engines won’t look at it as link spam and discount it still.
We are constantly told that the more links we have pointing to out sites the higher we get ranked in search engines like Google. Now it is natural to set up a site and then go out to get an avalanche of links pointing to your site. After all there are so many link directory submission services and link submission software available out there – at a very reasonable price mind you. You can even buy links from high PR sites at a fair cost. So it is easy to get tempted and get many links all at once. Should you do it? Noooo!
If you get too many links too fast, your site might disappear on important search engines such as Google (ever heard of being sandboxed?) while it is being assessed closely. Google uses links to determine the importance of a page. Their argument is that, if many sites link to yours then it means it is believed to be an authority site and therefore deserves higher rankings. So now, if your new site suddenly gets so many links, doesn’t it become questionable? How is it possible for so many people to have read and linked to your brand new site so fast? This is obviously regarded as link spam and if you do it you get panelized. You can stay penalized for months, which would put your online business at a stand still if you rely on search engine traffic.
Grow your link network gradually, don’t rush. Let it take a “natural” course and Google, the “rewarder” of the just, will reward you handsomely for it.
Bookmarking has become a new phenomenon of late and Google, the search engine giant, doesn’t seem to have a problem with it because it follows their principle of link democracy on the web i.e. links are obtained by merit and that is what bookmarking does or at least should do. So because it is very easy to get back links through book marking you might start bookmarking as many pages of your site as you can all at the same time. Watch out, first you might get penalized by the search engines as discussed above and secondly you might get penalized by the bookmarking sites if you over do it. These sites can just ban you through your IP address and once that happens you would not able to bookmark using your computer. More on this in my up coming ebook.
Let me end with this one ( wait for my book for the complete list). It is natural to place as many ads as possible on our websites. If there are more ads then it means a visitor will at least click on one, right? Wrong!
If you are just starting out, you need links. Not many people are willing to link to a commercial website. People want to link to sites that provide valuable information. You must give them that. Avoid monetizing your site when it is still new and you are tying to grow your inbound links more especially if you want a link back from the highly acclaimed Dmoz project.
When you decide to monetize, I highly recommend that you cut back on banners and other graphic ads. These, in my experience do not convert as well as text or contextual ads. I usually place one Google ad unit and one link unit per page instead of the maximum limits allowed. Google Adwords advertisers bid for space, so if I limit the space for ads on my page I am bound to get only the highest bidders than if I placed many ad units on each page and have the visitor click on the one with the lowest bid. Apart from this, Google has introduced smart pricing, actually it’s been around for a while now, which means you are being paid Adsense commission based on how well your Google Adense ads are doing. If they are not converting well then you get paid less. So remove all the Adsense ads that are not performing well (you can use channels to track performance for each of the ad units).
I monetized a brand new website with Adsense and it took 10 months to get 10 descent links and in that 10 months I only made US$20 with the Adsense on the site. I did not make anything with the Amazon banners and other affiliate programs. Funny enough after learning this internet marketing strategy I applied it to my other sites and got links from forums (very good for target traffic) and my Adsense income short up within 3 months.
It is really amazing to realize how much the little things we do can change our internet marketing profits. Looking forward to hearing from you.
